Important Information

Multifetal reduction is a complex and highly individualized fetal medicine procedure. It involves important medical, emotional and ethical considerations and should only be undertaken after detailed specialist counselling and informed decision-making.
  • The procedure does not guarantee an uncomplicated pregnancy.
  • There is a risk of pregnancy loss and other complications, and the risk depends on factors such as gestational age, number of fetuses and type of multiple pregnancy.
  • The outcome may differ depending on whether the fetuses share a placenta.
  • Additional ultrasound monitoring is generally required following the procedure.
  • The decision should be made after discussing the available options, including continuation of the multiple pregnancy and other appropriate management strategies.
