Mid-Trimester Anomaly scan
The mid-trimester anomaly scan, also known as the detailed anatomy scan or 20-week scan, is a comprehensive ultrasound examination usually performed around 18–22 weeks of pregnancy. It provides a detailed assessment of your baby’s growth and developing anatomy, including the brain, face, spine, heart, abdomen and limbs, along with the placenta and amniotic fluid.

When Is It Recommended?
The mid-trimester anomaly scan is generally performed during the 18–22 week period of pregnancy, depending on local practice and individual clinical circumstances.
- It provides a detailed assessment of fetal anatomy.
- It evaluates fetal growth and important measurements.
- It allows careful assessment of the baby's brain, spine, face, heart, abdomen and limbs.
- It assesses the placenta and amniotic fluid.
- It may identify certain structural abnormalities that can be visible at this stage of pregnancy.
- Your doctor may recommend additional or targeted examinations depending on your pregnancy and the findings.
Important Information
The anomaly scan is an important screening examination, but it cannot detect every possible genetic, structural or developmental condition. Some abnormalities may be difficult to see because of fetal position, gestational age or other factors.
- A normal anomaly scan does not guarantee that your baby is completely free from every condition.
- Some conditions may develop or become apparent later in pregnancy.
- The baby's position can sometimes make it difficult to obtain all the required images.
- A repeat scan may occasionally be recommended if certain views cannot be obtained clearly.
- Additional specialist assessment or testing may be recommended if an unusual finding is identified.
- Your doctor or fetal medicine specialist will explain the findings and guide you regarding any required follow-up.
